Stop it.

Stop submitting the same thing over and over. It says right on the submit page:

"Do not re-submit your entry after it has been BLAMMED without making noticeable improvements. It will be flagged!"

Although this wasn't blammed, submitting 7 versions of nearly the same thing counts as well.

The 'game' isn't bad. It's just not interesting to the masses. I was ok with this the first time. Maybe the second time. Now, it's annoying.

The score you have is the score that Newgrounders have given you. You need to deal with it.

PHENE responds:

You... You need to pull the stick out of your ass.

Don't use system keys as controls.

The game's not bad. I had several times where the controls either stuck or got ADHD and I fired extra ammo or rotated a half turn instead of just a bit, but that may be my computer.

The problem that you can address is the choice of keys. Don't use system keys for controls. Shift and Ctrl are system keys. If you use arrow keys for movement, then A, S, D, Z, X, and SPACE are all readily available for use, but won't cause the problems that Shift or Ctrl will.

Retronamic responds:

Thank you for the feedback! We really appreciate it.

Don't submit tests.

It says right on the submit page:

"Your movie must not be a pointless "demo" or "preview" without any redeeming qualities."

This is an unwinnable demo, so it's pointless.

Don't submit unfinished or pointless things. :\

Quite an interesting idea.

It would be nice to see something other than text, even if it's just a window with a line and dots. (Think: side view like Mario, but with nothing but a line and 2 colors of dots heading toward each other and disappearing when they are dead.)

Also, it would've been nice to have some info about your enemies so as to adjust the upgrades before the battle. If Bookahooka is resistant to Flotz, I'd like to know in advance so I can pump up my Plotz and Clotz. Ha! Someone who is reading that and hasn't played the game yet is thinking I'm a dork. ;) ..oh, wait. :\

:)

Rabid-Animals responds:

Resistances and weaknesses are random for each instance of play. Monsters won't have the same kind of reactions every game. Showing them beforehand would make the levels too easy. We'll consider the visual idea, though.

Thanks for the review!

You're getting there.

But it still needs more.

1. While the maze path has to be set, the background doesn't. Make the maze clear and easy to see, but do something with the large grey areas to make them interesting. Make the sides be...the side of a haunted house, tree branches from a scary woods, a creepy garden maze, or something like that. If you make a non-Halloween maze, use the same idea but with non-scary themes. Even if you don't want to, or can't, make all the grey a picture, at least put some pictures into the grey area.

2. Music? From your comments I expected the 'This is Halloween' song from The Nightmare Before Christmas to play.

3. You need more levels. Have 10 levels before you submit.

You're getting there. Don't rush. Do your best, even if it takes you a day or two instead of an hour or two. Extra time and effort ALWAYS pay off.

The game looks fine...

But the time limit is way too short. That sucks all the fun out of the game.

BlackCrossGames responds:

I see you don't like a challenge... Well, I updated the time limit.

You have done a very rude thing. :(

Don't submit unfinished things! Normally, I hate to see parts and bits of flashes and games come thru. They're parts, not finished items, and Newgrounds is for finished items.

What you have done is worse. This is cool. I want more. I want to know what happens. I want to see the end. I was impressed. THEN you stopped it WAY TOO SHORT. That's like making an awesome dinner and then taking it away with only one bite.

So not only did you err in that you submitted an unfinished item, but you also put thru a painfully small taste of what could be a grand finished product, but you'll also now be stuck with a forever unfinished bit on Newgrounds- because you'll submit the finished item as a separate item, not replace this one.

That's too bad. Really. :\

Vagabondage responds:

As I said this is a proof of concept rather than a full game. It's a short animation with buttons. I wish I had the capabilities of making a real game, but I am unskilled in the ways of AS3 - in fact, it gives me a migraine. This serves as a sort of proposal for someone out there to possibly help me out. If I can't find anyone, I'll take on the daunting task of coding it myself. However, I'm glad it has struck interest in you and other viewers and I'll use the critiques here to create something much better and longer than what is shown.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

Nope. Fail.

I don't want to have to register for some other site in order to play a game on this one.

Nope. It's got problems.

1. The tank is too big or the screen is too small. You can't see very far in front of your tank. It would help to have either a larger screen area or a smaller tank.

2. It's doesn't help to have the screen move. When the tank moves, the screen advances in that direction, but when you stop, it snaps back and you can no longer see the attackers. Again, it would help to shrink the tank so we can see more of the area around us.

3. A smaller tank would help us move about. I found myself getting the corner of my tank caught on the corner of buildings or barriers and it stopped me in my tracks. More room to maneuver would help.

4. Too many weapons. It's difficult to fire with the space bar when you're trying to turn or evade attackers. For this game, it would be better to have only one weapon, aimed and fired with the mouse.

5. Weak weapons or bad aiming? I was firing on small chickens with the machine gun, and they didn't die. It was like I was firing over them. In a top-down game, you shouldn't be able to fire over something. I tried with the main cannon, and some died, but not as well as they should have. I had a large chicken right in front of my tank (hurting me) and I fired the main gun and he still killed me. Is the strike area only where the aiming pointer is? If so, the hit zone should be anywhere in a straight line out from the gun. If I can shoot past something that's right in front of me, that's bad. Not fun at all.

The game has potential to be fun, but it's too cramped and too difficult to attack the enemies. Shrink it down so we can see around us, put in more (often) chickens, and let us go in guns blazing and blow stuff up and kick some butt and this'll be fun. :)

It's brokded. :\

The preloader starts it, but the preloader remains. I saw your other one so I knew what to expect.

Anyway, you want advice? Here's the best advice I can give:

Just keep practicing flash and watching more stuff here on Newgrounds. And DON'T try to submit things in the meantime. If you try to rush it, you'll submit crap. If you try to submit things without ideas, you'll either fill your account with blams or with crap. Then when you get an idea that may be decent, people will see your account has lots of low scoring bits and pieces, and they'll think you don't care. Stay away from Sonic/Mario/Dragon Ball Z/Madness/hentai slideshow -type ideas for flashes. They're over used, over done, quick-fix ideas that will bring in low, but passing scores. They're easy points, but cheap points, and they'll bring the quality of your portfolio down.

So for now, watch and play stuff on Newgrounds. Don't stick to the Top 50 or the stuff that was just submitted. Search out things with scores above 3.50, and things on the pages that are further back than the main page. Take a run thru my favorites. There's good stuff there. Fill your mind with memories.

Eventually, one memory will build on another memory and you'll come up with an original story or idea. Also, listen to music. Not just rock or hip hop or metal or whatever you normally listen to, but mix it up a bit. Eventually, you might hear a song and an idea will pop into your head as you listen. Many songs tell stories that can be animated. Even songs with no words. Ever see the movie Fantasia? All music, no words, great stories.

That's how I came up with all my ideas. Unfortunately, I've been unable to get a copy of Flash so far, so my ideas are still stuck in my head instead of posted here on Newgrounds for you all to see.

When you get an idea, PUT MAJOR TIME INTO IT! If you can get it done in a day, you're not done. If it takes you a week, you're probably still not done. I've seen many good ideas that passed but have horribly low scores because they got an idea, belted out a quick animation, submitted it, and now they're stuck with a low score on a crappy flash that was originally a great idea and could've been awesome, but they ruined it by rushing. Taking extra time to take it from good to great will ALWAYS pay off. Not one person who has ever had something in the top 50 got it there by submitting something that wasn't 100% finished and was EXACTLY how they wanted it to be before they submitted it. If you see things that can be made better, make them better! Work on them until they're the best they can be.

yftachman responds:

fixed it.
i think.

and thanks for the comment, this wasn't supposed to be the best thing ever, its just a gift i did for my friend. i worked on it for about 2 weeks and it wasn't a hardcore work, just whenever i feel like doing it you know?
